School Ministry

FAQs

Who is it for and how does it work?

Scripture Union's work in schools is directed primarily at children ages 10 17 and occasional seminars are held for local PTA's.

At the moment we have two staff workers and 319 very dedicated volunteers, who work in more than 200 schools, reaching an average of 24,00 boys and girls with the good news of Christ.

Staff salaries are partially met with local donations, and subsidized by our income generating projects. The cost of teaching materials and other equipment is payed for by those who benefit from the program (volunteers, teachers, students).

When did this ministry begin?

English missionaries brought the work of Scripture Union to schools in Peru in the early 50s. Over the years many foreigners teaching in Peru have been involved as volunteers with the program.

Short term goals

  • To enhance our schools work by establishing new contacts with churches
  • To complete publication on a text and student workbook
  • To develop schools and camp work along Peru's coast and to implement a Bible ministry

Long term goals

  • To work in 90% of public schools along Peru's coast, Andes and jungle
  • To attract new volunteers
  • To improve written resources

Prayer requests

  • That God would be glorified as we contact new schools in March
  • That we will finish off well in schools and be invited back next year
  • For parental permission and funds to participate in our 2004 camping season
  • For insight and wisdom as we draft materials for next year
  • For guidance as we share our vision for ministry with churches and surrounding schools
  • For income generating projects that will sustain the work of Scripture Union in many new schools

Camps

FAQs

Who are they for?

Scripture Union has been the model for Christian camping in Peru since 1954. It offers camps for almost every age imaginable. Summer programs start out with children as young as seven and go right up to include family camps and senior camps.

Where are they held?

We have been blessed with several very beautiful campsites. Our main site is Kawai, south of Lima on the beach, where year round camps, seminars and retreats are held. Kimo in the jungle and Kusi in the high Andes are remote locations where our campers spend some of the best moments of their lives. In the deep Amazon basin, along the Itaya river, Scripture Union has plans to add a campsite as part of its development plan for Puerto Alegria.

Who pays for the camp?

Fees are set for most camps depending on length of stay and location. However, fund raisers are promoted and scholarships are often made available.

Short term goals

Repeat last year's successful Day Camp held in a Lima shanty town

Long term goals

  • A new campsite in the jungle
  • To have college juniors and seniors run a coffee shop to help subsidize camp fees

Prayer requests

  • For our staff and volunteers
  • For the campers
  • For pastors involved in our seminars and our faithful readers
  • For funds for our camping program and scholarships
